Two recent posts: Lula and Fidel

24 Nov

Following the announcement that Brazil’s former (and some say future) president has laryngeal cancer, I posted a thought piece on VL about Lula, his portrayal in the media and the whole sticky issue of forming a personal attachment to a public figure; because I really do like Lula even as I sometimes disagree with him, and what kind of historian would I be if I didn’t overthink everything?  Recent news indicates that his prognosis is indeed hopeful, which is wonderful news.  Força, Lula!

Yesterday I posted my review of Fidel Castro’s 2010 military memoirs, which, while slow going at first, really were a fascinating read (for many reasons).  Perhaps inevitably given my subject(s), I find myself becoming more and more interested in military history, and Castro’s book really is an education in basic strategy and logistics.  The improvised beef jerky factory (first, expropriate your cow…) will always stick in my mind.
